Taylor's 1st Visit Back to the House

This pen had been laying on the table when we arrived at the house and had been used and in perfect condition shortly before it was found in this condition. If you look closely at the top photo you can see the grip like indentations along the bottom curve of the photo. The lower photo, from a different angle, shows more of the very apparent bubbling that was generated by some unidentified heat source coming in contact with the pen.

Taylor shortly after arriving and excited about his first return to the house.

View from the back yard looking up at the small bathroom window.

Taylor took this photo in the yard just out the back door, to the right off and just off the bottom stair. He reported feeling something significant there but couldn't determine what it was or why he felt that way. We wouldn't find out until his next visit months later.

The back yard also has stone remnants of a retainment wall or perhaps driveway that stretches almost completely from one side of the yard to the other. It parallels the house about 10-12 feet to the east. It should be remembered that when the house was built, what is now the front of the house was originally the back of the house and visa versa.

This photo is of the foundation area of the back of the house. Early on, and from the eastern most interior wall of the basement, these areas were seen and thought to be entrances to the underground railroad (which was active in Atchison so many years ago). Later it was discovered that those access areas were seen from the houses exterior and therefore could not be tunnels underground.

When a masonry worker was consulted, it was revealed that in early settlements it was often the case that people would build the basement of there house, and live in it until they could afford or complete the rest of the house.
