Report by Renae Leiker (continued):

We arrived after dark. As we pulled through the nearest town we noticed snow on the top of the cars in the dealership. I decided we should eat and get gas before attempting the roads to our camping destination so we looked for someplace to eat.

It was after eight pm so we were probably lucky they hadn’t rolled up the streets for the night. We headed to the truck stop where I had the chance of running into a cousin or someone I knew. As we sat in the booth we heard some clicks that sounded just like the ones that we noticed followed us home. Well hey it was a place we were not real familiar with. I even started wondering if we always heard clicks and had just not noticed it before.

In a small town everyone knows each other and we just sat there listening to what they were all talking about. Oh they got so much moisture and the fields would start looking good and the usual chit chat of a small town. One man was telling another about how he had to get out the tractor just to pull his son out and he wasn’t even IN the field.

I decided right there we were not going to attempt getting to the old farm ground at night after dark on an all dirt road while it was still raining or sleeting or what ever it was doing outside. We checked into the motel for the night. There was that clicking again. Three hundred and sixty miles from the Sallie house and we had never had any indication anyone had gone home with up to our last visit so why would they follow us camping? Must be coincidence so we blamed it on the “old TV”.

It was the last time I can remember leaving the house for longer than a couple hours and not taking my equipment, I learned my lesson. I have no doubts that we were not alone but without my equipment I can’t tell who they are and it is just silly to assume that even if it is a ghost that it would be a ghost from the Sallie house.

The next day after getting stuck on the road getting out there we finally made it to the old farm grounds. The house has been gone for many years and the closest neighbor is at least a mile away. On the road there were NO tracks of any kind, even the road was rarely used.

Thanks to my husband we started a bon fire with the blow torch he told us to take. Once we got settled and had a fire to cook with we started laughing that at least now we can explain the pops cracks and clicks. When my son and I build a fire we feed the fire one tree at a time. We sat there laughing thinking we had forgotten to let the volunteer fire department know we were back in town then debated about needing to.

We stayed there three more days and never put the tent up. I can not tell you how many times I heard cars and trucks that sounded like they were going to pop up over the horizon. We both heard old cars pulling up at night in front of the old house foundation. We even heard the car doors open and close only to find the next morning that there had not been anyone even as close as the dirt road.

My attempt to explain it away saying it was just our imaginations failed when Troy pointed out that our dogs were also getting up and looking out the windows when we heard the cars. I don’t know how to argue with that one so I didn’t. When we got into the van to sleep we could tell that the clicking was right there with us but a few minutes and it would be gone again.

When we returned home I sent out an email saying we were back and that I would get started on everything right away. I think Jennifer was the only one that didn’t write back to say that they had heard the clicking since the night at the Sallie house.
